Peru Seeks to Expand Copper Mining Production Amid Surging Global Demand

Peru, the world's second-largest copper producer, seeks to capitalize on rising global demand for the red metal driven by the energy transition and supply chain reconfiguration amid Middle East tensions.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines announced fast-tracked approval of three new mining projects in the Apurímac and Cajamarca regions, with a combined investment of $4.2 billion. The projects could add 350,000 annual tonnes to national production.

"Copper is essential for transport electrification and renewable energy," the Energy Minister emphasized. "Peru has the opportunity to be a protagonist in this global transformation."

However, local communities have raised concerns about environmental impact. Peasant organizations in Cajamarca demand more rigorous impact studies and greater participation in economic benefits.

Copper prices reached $10,500 per tonne this week on the London Metal Exchange, driven by geopolitical uncertainty and trade restrictions. Analysts project that Peru could surpass Chile as the leading producer by 2030 if it maintains its investment pace.
